The point of Earth Hour isn’t/wasn’t to save energy for just one hour but to raise awareness of energy-efficiency so that people are more aware of their energy use and are more energy-efficient for the long term. In business it’s not just “sell more” to make more money; spending less increases profit and is thus another way make more money. Energy-efficiency is not just beneficial for environmental & social issues but benefits business too.

I welcome any alternative views backed up by facts but saying the CfA press release from 2003 you present here as being free of any oil influence is incorrect; two of the authors were from an organisation that was part-funded by ExxonMobil and the other was one of several scientists who were known as “familiar spokespeople from ExxonMobil-funded organizations”.

I guess global warming or not, the earth will heal itself. Its only us humans who will perish. And if we continue to do nothing, the future generations will not see nature as we did. Remember the ozone layer growing thin? It took laws to ban chemicals to stop it from thinning. And it was successful.

A) I am NOT an “objective journalist.” Don’t put myself out there as one. And I would argue (many agreeing) that there is not such thing as a journalist who does not inject their opinion or allow their world view to saturate their writing/reporting.

B) My point in writing the article was to draw attention to and provide a living example of how Tribal Seduction works even on a global scale. The environmental movement is very good at engaging emotions, even if I and many scientists increasingly disagree with their positions/claims. By seeing Tribal Marketing in action; seducing millions around the world into taking action on something that has no tangible impact — what could you learn from that and apply in your marketing and sales?

If people disagree with alternative views backed with facts, well…. that gets into a religious discussion. Some would say that’s what the environmental movement has become. But alas, as interesting a topic that is and as many correlations as there are — that is a discussion for another day.

Whilst there’s some fascinating points here and it’s agreed that Earth Hour should be more than just an hour, there’s probably not enough room here to expand upon the points made so I’ve stripped “the naked truth” down to “the bare bones” in Questioning the Questioners.

Going further down the rabbit hole is always a little more uncomfortable but at least there’s more to see.

I’m becoming impatient for the day when I can tell them all, “I told you so.”
